Brahma Chicken Information

Brahma Chicken InformationLittle is known about the exact origins of the Brahma breed, other than that it is named for a river in India. Some poultry historians speculate that Brahmas are the same birds as the Chittagong’s of India others suspect that the breed as we know it today may have been developed by immigrants crossing Chinese Shanghai chickens with Chittagong’s in the great American melting pot of the 1840’s California.

Early Brahmas grew quickly, but today they mature more slowly. They also are one of the largest breeds. They have a level back line, but they’re long, feathered legs, arched neck, and short tail give the birds and upright posture. These physical traits, combined with their lovely color patterns, make for a really magnificent looking bird.

Although they don’t lay a lot of eggs, Brahmas are good for winter production of brown eggs. The hens go broody quite easily, but they occasionally break eggs in the nest due to their weight. Brahmas do all right in confinement, if given sufficient space but do better when given access to the outdoors. They are mellow and quite hearty, standing up well to both heat and cold. The Brahma was first submitted to the APA in 1874.
