Natural rubber is a huge raw material import to this country, second only to petroleum. "Hevea brasiliensis", the rubber tree, produces the latex which is present in our everyday products ranging from vehicle tires to medical latex gloves. Its pervasive presence is vital to our economics and common place in our daily functioning. We hardly give a second thought to its origins as the sap of an exotic foreign tree. Ironically, as we have experimented with even wider spread of latex's usefulness, there has been a growing allergic response to its proteins amid our population.

[1]Image via Wikipedia Next week is the second annual conference of the Slow Money Alliance. [2] That's the group recently founded by Woody Tasch, co-founder of the social enterprise angel group Investors' Circle. Its aim is ambitious: developing a fundamentally new approach to investment--to capitalism, really. And, judging from response to the conference, it seems to picking up speed. Borrowing a lot from the Slow Food movement, the Slow Money philosophy seeks to encourage investment in local food enterprises, an approach explained in Tasch's book, Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered [3]. He calls for investors to put some of their money into local sustainable farming. And that, he says, would discourage the unfettered growth -at -any- cost attitude that has created the current, untenable on-the-precipice of environmental collapse situation we now face, creating, instead, a stronger, healthier, more solid and sustainable economy. The system to support these efforts would include regional financial hubs where investors and entrepreneurs could meet. Investors' returns would be relatively modest, but still healthy, steady--and, again, sustainable. Revenues from these mostly farming, agricultural ventures also would strengthen local communities and, at some point, other types of businesses could also get in on the act. To spread the risk--investing in one little farm could be a recipe for losing all your money--there would be Slow Money funds, with many farms in the portfolio. In fact, Tasch is trying to raise $50 million to $100 million to launch a series of funds, which could bankroll hundreds of businesses. One thing seems sure about the movement: the timing is right. Tasch's book came out around the time the economy crashed and disenchantment with traditional approaches to investment started growing. I've heard people say that the local food movement--and, with it, Slow Money--may be the new youth movement of the decade, the thing that really galvanizes the current generation of disillusioned young people. In the meantime, the conference, which meets June 9-11 in Shelburne Farms, Vt, has a series of well-known socially minded speakers, like Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy, and a roster of 22 interesting sustainable small businesses, like Rotokawa Cattle, a Jericho, Vt., farm selling grass-fed beef and Greenling [4], an Austin, Tx, online service for grocery delivery from local organic farms. Q - What's the difference between a colony and a swarm of bees? A - A colony of bees has an established hive. The hive is a year-round home. Bees in a colony defend the hive, raise their young and search for food. If the hive gets crowded, they raise another queen who leaves the hive with about half the population of the hive to find and establish a new hive. The bees searching for a new home is called a swarm. The swarm will find a place to rest and scout bees are sent out to find a suitable location for the new hive. Swarms will usually leave inside 24 hours. Bee removal of swarms is rarely needed.

With this being my first blog I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Tyler Bastine and I’m an Associate Producer for the America's Heartland series. I’ve been apart of AH team for over three years now and prior to working for the program I did not have any background in agriculture, so for me this has been quite an eye opening experience!

I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel across the country (As well as overseas) to capture our stories. I would say this is ‘hands down’ the best part of my job. I’m able to meet the fine folks who work extremely hard from sun up to sun down daily. I must admit, they are some of the most down-to-earth (literally) and genuine people I've met. It takes a certain breed of individual to do what they do. All in all I’ve come away with much more respect and appreciation for the farmers that work so hard to provide food, fiber, and clothing for the rest of us. I'm very proud to be a part of a national program that celebrates all they do for this country and abroad.
