NASCAR Sprint Series Samsung 500 Race Recap

April 9, 2008

Dale Earnhardt Jr won the pole, and Carl Edwards qualified second for the spring running of the Samsung 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway.

The 88 of Earnhardt Jr lead the first 18 laps before being passed by the no. 18 Interstate Batteries car of Kyle Busch.  Fan favorite Jeff Gordon, who started 16th quickly fell to the rear of the pack after weekend long handling problems plagued the number 24 Dupont Chevrolet.

The race remained caution free until lap 29 when there was a one car spin by the Napa Toyota driven by Micheal Waltrip.  Following the first round of pit stops, Dale Earnhardt Jr regained the top position in the race.

Junior continued to lead the race until lap 48 when reigning series champ Jimmie Johnson passed the number 88 to assume the lead and earn 5 bonus points.

On lap 100 Jeff Gordon’s ill handling car spun and hit the wall bringing out another caution.  Robbie Gordon scraped the wall on lap 130 to bring out a caution.  J.J. Yeley crashed into the inside wall on lap 177 to bring out yet another caution.

The race ended under the Green, White, Checkered format with Carl Edwards holding off Jimmie Johnson to win his 3rd race of the season.
