Choosing the right type of camping stove
April 7, 2008
A camp stove is a must-have for every outdoor enthusiast, but there are many factors to take into account when purchasing one. The first consideration when buying a camp stove is fuel type.
Cartridge stoves are generally lighter and more maintenance free than those fueled by liquid gas. Cartridge stoves also simmer better than their liquid gas cousins. Cartridge stoves are notorious for being fickle in windy conditions. In breezy conditions, use a windscreen, or camp in a sheltered area.
Gas and liquid fuel stoves are generally not recommended for winter use due to the high frequency of mechanical problems due to low temperatures. Wood powered camp stoves have an extra advantage in the winter since you need to use your stove much more in the winter to melt snow for drinking water, with a wood camp stove you don’t have to worry about running out of fuel. Gasoline is not fit to burn in anything except an emergency. Alcohol stoves , rare these days, require a lot of fuel, and don’t really get that hot..
Coleman has developed a “dual fuel” version of stoves which will also run on unleaded gasoline, but the original will work well on gasoline in a pinch. I’ve used it many times when I either ran out of or forgot my Coleman fuel. Coleman fuel is available almost everywhere, from your local hardware or sporting goods store to the most distant outpost frequented by campers. However, since unleaded gasoline was introduced countless years ago, it made sense to create a dual fuel version of the stove to take advantage of the even wider availability of gasoline. Coleman offers a wide selection of quality camp stoves.
Coleman fuel needs to be pressurized by manually pumping air into the cylinder but works efficiently. For the most value, choose from a variety of available multi fuel stoves, large or small.
A Coleman stove, if taken care of, will last and run 100 or more years unless you get them wet and rusty. These stoves have fold-out legs for the stove to sit on.
