Give Pheasant Hunting A Try

April 1, 2008

pheasant-1.jpgPheasant hunting is an important upland game bird hunting activity and each year thousands of hunters enjoy this recreational opportunity. Pheasant hunting is largely relegated to private lands with harvest on public lands considered a bonus to the quail bag. Over the past three seasons, the average annual harvest has been just shy of 100,000 with an estimated 97,037 roosters harvested during the 2007-2008 season. Pheasant hunting is expected to be well above average and turkey hunting should be very good, as it was last year. With birds, every variable is important, including winter weather, spring precipitation, temperature, cover, and the abundance of insects.

Pheasant hunting is also another winter activity the hunter is prepared for.  A well trained upland dog can be an important tool for the pheasant enthusiast, but it requires just the right training to be done.
Pheasant hunting is physical, and requires a fair amount of walking in heavy cover. Transportation between fields is done with specially equipped vehicles that accommodate hunters, their equipment, and bird dogs.

Pheasant hunting is an important upland game bird hunting activity and each year thousands of hunters enjoy this recreational opportunity in. Pheasant hunting is available for either the older or not so adventuresome hunter, or with bigger fields for the aggressive hunters.  Pheasant hunting is one of those sports in which the aid of a dog is invaluable, and without which it would be almost impossible to make a hunt.  Even a bird that has been hit can still run long distances very quickly and elude the hunter. Pheasant hunting with a well trained group of pheasant hunting dogs is an experience that no upland bird hunter shall soon forget.

Hunters desiring privacy, high quality hunting habitat, a variety of hunting conditions and an outstanding demonstration of dog work (many preserves do allow hunters to bring their own dogs) will enjoy Iowa’s hunting preserves. The state of Iowa offers excellent pheasant hunting opportunities and licensed hunting preserves provide hunters with an option of fast action in a relatively short time frame.  Hunters must have the correct permits and hunting license to participate. Organized hunts which have prereleased birds have an advantage for young pheasant hunting dogs new to hunting; the hunter knows birds are there so he can keep encouraging his dog to find them without fear of failure.

Pheasant hunting is largely centered in South Dakota where it’s steeped in tradition, but ranges operate in North Dakota as well. Supervised hunts give relatively unskilled shooters the guidance they need while not doing the work for them. Pheasant hunting is good throughout the season. Actual weather conditions on the hunting date may somewhat control the method of hunting, but the big birds are there. Pheasant hunting is great.

Give pheasant hunting a try, there are many great rural areas throughout the United States that you can try.
